Behind the scenes: building an AI-first Geeky Kids website
At Geeky Kids, we help students turn curiosity into practical skills and confidence. We’re applying that same curiosity to our own business: how can we use AI to make finding and arranging tuition easier, while keeping our service personal?
Our new website is part of that journey. With support from TekniLabs, an AI-first technology consultancy, we’re bringing course information, enquiries and tutor coordination closer together.
The aim is straightforward: spend less time moving information between systems and more time helping students find the right support.
A website built around your enquiry
Families come to us with different questions. A beginner might want to create their first Python game. A GCSE student may need help understanding Computer Science theory. A DofE participant needs a structured coding programme, while a school may be looking for provision for a group of learners.
Our enquiry forms reflect those differences. They collect information relevant to the subject or programme, giving our team a clearer starting point.
Once you submit an enquiry, it is saved on our platform and you receive an email acknowledging receipt. Our team can then review your requirements and discuss suitable tuition.
How AI helps behind the scenes
AI helps prepare a suggested response using our approved course information, tuition options, pricing and policies.
For example, if you ask about Python tuition for a beginner, the system can help our team explain an appropriate starting point, outline the available tuition options and identify any missing information needed to arrange lessons.
For a DofE enquiry, it can draw on our programme guidance and explain the importance of confirming the required activity duration.
This gives our team a useful first draft. It also helps us keep information consistent across different enquiries.
A person reviews the suggested reply before sending it. AI does not independently confirm tutor availability, reserve a lesson or arrange payment.
Keeping people in the conversation
Tuition depends on relationships. Understanding a student’s interests, finding a suitable tutor and agreeing a workable schedule all need care and judgement.
Our internal workflow lets authorised staff review and refine draft responses and coordinate tutor availability. A suggested time is treated as an option until the arrangements have been agreed.
That distinction matters. We want technology to help us communicate clearly, without making promises that our team has not confirmed.
Our tutors remain responsible for teaching. Their individual attention, explanations and encouragement are central to the Geeky Kids experience.
What we mean by “AI-first”
For us, being AI-first means considering where AI can make a process more useful, then building the right information and safeguards around it.
It starts with accurate business information. An AI system needs reliable course descriptions, current prices and clear policies to produce a helpful response. We maintain that information in our platform so it can support both the website and our enquiry tools.
It also means setting boundaries. Our enquiry assistant can consult approved information, but it cannot independently make bookings or take payments. Draft responses remain subject to human review.
We collect information relevant to an enquiry, ask customers to leave out sensitive details, and redact known personal details from the previews used in our internal Slack workflow.
What comes next?
We’re exploring how this foundation could support course recommendations, connections to calendar availability and a customer portal.
In time, that could make it easier for families to retrieve meeting details, view upcoming lessons and request cancellations or rescheduling.
Those features are future plans, rather than services available through the website today. We’ll introduce them as the supporting processes and integrations are ready.
Our focus will stay the same: clear information, practical support and personal tuition that helps students progress.
